- Chatbots
When a company thinks about automating support on WhatsApp or its website, one question comes up: a “traditional” chatbot or an AI-powered one? Both have their place.
The traditional chatbot: menus and buttons
It works with a decision tree: “Type 1 for opening hours, 2 for prices…”. It is predictable and easy to set up.
A good choice if:
- Your customers usually ask the same things.
- You need a tightly controlled flow, for example to take an order step by step.
- You want to start with the smallest possible investment.
Its limitation: if the customer writes something that is not on the menu, the bot doesn’t understand it and the experience becomes frustrating.
The AI chatbot: natural conversation
An AI assistant understands what customers write in their own words, even with typos, and answers using your business information: catalog, prices, policies, FAQs.
A good choice if:
- You receive a wide variety of questions.
- You want the bot to also sell, recommend products or solve complex questions.
- You want an experience closer to talking to a person.
Keep in mind: it needs a good knowledge base and clear limits, so it only answers about your business and hands over to a person when it doesn’t know something.
The best of both worlds
In practice, many of the projects we build combine both approaches: AI to understand and converse, and guided flows for specific processes like booking an appointment or confirming a payment. Always with the option to hand the conversation to someone on your team.
Which one to choose?
Ask yourself three questions:
- How varied are my customers’ questions?
- Do I want the bot to just inform, or also sell?
- How many messages do I receive per day?
If the answers are “very varied”, “also sell” and “a lot”, an AI chatbot will give you a much higher return.
